Rockford hospitals get green light to give new treatment to COVID-19 patients

ROCKFORD, Ill. (WTVO) – Advanced, laboratory-produced antibody treatment has been approved for the treatment of patients with COVID-19 in Rockford. OSF, Mercyhealth and SwedishAmerican use the treatment.

According to doctors at OSF Saint Anthony, the monoclonal immunotherapy infusion has been approved for high-risk adult patients with moderate COVID.

Medical experts say the treatment is most effective when given during the first 10 days of symptoms.

“We can’t afford to fill our hospitals with COVID because then we can’t take care of other people,” said OSF Vice President of Medical Services Mark Meeker. “I really hope that this antibody really reduces the progression of the disease in this high-risk population so that we can keep our hospitals at full capacity.

Doctors say the infusion is not approved for hospitalized patients with COVID.
