COLOMBO, Sri Lanka (AP) – Police in Sri Lanka on Thursday arrested the ruling Mrs. World for removing the crown from the head of the winner of the beauty contest of Mrs. Sri Lanka and allegedly causing injuries. She was later released on bail.
Caroline Jury, who won the “Mrs. World 2020” competition, was accused of injuring Pushpika De Silva, who won the title of Mrs. Sri Lanka in a television competition held on Sunday in Colombo.
Moments after De Silva won the title, Jury, who is also Sri Lankan, took the stage and grabbed her crown, saying he was not allowed to because she was divorced. Jury then gave the crown first place, declaring himself the winner.
In a statement on his Facebook page, De Silva denied that she was divorced.
“Being divided is one thing. Divorce is something else. I am still an divorced woman, “she wrote.
Police spokesman Ajit Rohana said police received a complaint from De Silva that she had been injured when her crown was removed.
Rohana said Jury and model Chula Padmendra were arrested on Thursday on charges of “insult and criminal force”
Jury declined to comment on leaving the police station.
The incident at Sunday’s contest, attended by the prime minister’s wife, caused a stir in the Indian Ocean island nation. On Monday, the organizers of the competition announced that they would return the crown to De Silva.
