Monitoring of the supply of COVID vaccines revealed a deeper problem with supply and demand. Some parts of the world and even parts of the United States need more vaccine.
In Santa Clara County Public Health, staff are trying to persuade more people in the county to get vaccinated.
The county is a good example of why they make more vaccines than people use, doesn’t mean there’s a surplus.
At one time, Santa Clara County desperately needed more vaccines against COVID-19. But when hundreds of thousands of additional doses recently arrived from the federal government, county officials now say they have more than it administers.
“We have this valuable amount of vaccine that other parts of the world don̵
South Bay Congressman Roe Hannah said other countries, including India and Brazil, could use some of the surplus vaccine in the United States. He wants the United States to send more supplies.
“Let’s get the vaccine there urgently,” he said. “Not only Astra Zeneca, but also licensing the Moderna and Pfizer formulas so that India can start producing vaccines.”
Many countries currently report a surplus of vaccines. In fact, states like Louisiana, Mississippi and Kansas have asked the government to suspend or restrict shipments.
But Santa Clara County Superintendent Cindy Chavez said the vaccine was given by the population, not by demand.
“We don’t have an additional vaccine at the moment,” she said. “We have people who need to be vaccinated.”
Officials also say the fragile nature of vaccines means there are other factors we need to understand.
“Storage. How much can we actually fit? And the distribution outside comes to us every week. So, you know, we can have a vaccine today. We may not have enough next week “, said Dr. Rocio Luna, cat. District Executive Director.
Fenstersheib said it hopes over the next few months, California and federal government officials will determine if the county has an additional vaccine and then be able to share it with the rest of the world.
This will indeed be the decision of the states and the federal government. For cities and counties, the priority will remain to try to convince as many people as possible to get photos. Then make sure there is enough.
