How the playoff format works with 24 teams

The NHL shared the “racing format” for the 24-team playoff setup on how the NHL 2020 playoffs will work. The “round slave” refers to the sowing of the top four teams in each conference. The “qualifying round” was formerly called the “playing round”

;. Toronto will host the Eastern Conference teams at Scotiabank Arena, while Edmonton will host Western Conference teams at Rogers Place.

Competitive format

In each conference teams sown by percentage points.

Round Robin: Top 4 teams play for first round sowing (current off-season rules)

Qualifying round: The other 8 teams play the best of series 5 to advance to the First Round (current playoff rules)

First and second round: The format (seeding relative to bracket) and series lengths will be the best of seven.

Conference finals and Stanley Cup final: The best series of 7 will take place at Rogers Place in Edmonton.

* The winners of the qualifying round play the first 4 seeds in the first round. The individual matches of the first round will be determined.
