All U.S. officials were tested after the Lithuanian embassy notified the Pentagon on Thursday that Caroblis had tested positive, according to Pentagon chief spokesman Jonathan Hoffman. Tata tested positive in two consecutive tests. None of the other employees are quarantined.
Hoffman said the Pentagon was continuing to monitor the contracts of defense officials who had close contact with the Lithuanian delegation or Tata.
Miller and the secretaries of the services are not quarantined “based on the testing and mitigation measures that were introduced during the Lithuanian delegation̵
“We will continue to assess the conditions, take appropriate preventive measures and take additional necessary tests,” he said.
General Mark Millie, chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, has had no contact with either Caroblis or Tata and has recently been subjected to negative results, according to his spokesman, Colonel David Butler.
Bloomberg first announced the news that Tata had a positive test.
This marks the second instance of Covid-19 in the senior ranks of the Pentagon. All but one of the United States chiefs of staff, as well as two other four-star officers, were forced to quarantine in October after meeting with the Pentagon’s guarded conference room with the Coast Guard’s deputy commander. Charles Ray, who gave positive results to the virus. Assistant Marine Commander Gary Thomas also later proved positive.
Miller and Tata temporarily took on two of the Pentagon’s top civilian roles last week after President Donald Trump fired former Secretary of Defense Mark Esper and the White House ousted James Anderson, the former acting president.
Trump nominated Tata for the Pentagon’s best political job in April, but his nomination was withdrawn over the summer amid concerns about Islamophobic tweets and other insulting comments, including calling former President Barack Obama a “terrorist leader.” In August, Tata was installed as temporary number 2 in Anderson’s shelving store.
Miller, a former Green Beret who has spent his career in the fight against terrorism, has been promoted from a mid-level officer in the National Security Council to a defense minister in less than a year.
