LOS ANGELES – Simon Cowell underwent surgery to repair a broken back as a result of an electric bicycle crash and is recovering in hospital, a spokesman said Sunday.
“Simon has broken his back in a number of places” after falling from a new motorcycle he had tested in the backyard of his home in Malibu on Saturday, the spokesman said. Family members were present.

Despite the ordeal, he gathered the strength to publish a “huge thank you” to the doctors and nurses who treated him. Cowell, known for his squeaky comments about the contestants, also shared some tips.
“If you’re buying a bike with an electric trail, read the manual before riding it for the first time,” he tweeted Sunday night.
The couple’s son and Silverman’s child from a previous marriage were with Cowell when the incident occurred. Cowell’s injury will force him to miss the start of current live seasons on NBC’s “America’s Got Talent.” The live show will start on Tuesday and Wednesday without him, the network announced.
He created the talent show, already in his 15th season, and served as a judge. The other judges of the show are Heidi Klum, Howie Mandel and Sofia Vergara, led by Terry Crews.
