SKOR North – The Vikings should trade for Jalen Ramsey

These two things are true of the Minnesota Vikings: they are in the middle of a win-win window and a championship can only be won on the back of their defense. If we all accept these two assumptions, the Vikings should talk to Jaguars Jacksonville about disgruntled retiring Jalen Ramsay.

Last week in a 13-12 loss to Houston Texas, Ramsay got into an argument with head coach Doug Marrone. After the game, ESPN announced that Ramsey wanted to trade.

"I want to win," Ramsey said during a news conference on Tuesday, in which he also stated that his application leaks came from the team, not him.

The price mark will no doubt be high. It is reported that the Jags want two cranes from the first round. Of course, it is unlikely that they will be able to raise so much equity, given that young DB star Minkah Fitzpatrick was traded to Pittsburgh this week for a first round pick.

Suppose that the Vikings will have to split with their first round pick in 2020 and possibly the current starting Xavier Rhodes corner in order for the cap space to work. Given both players' recent performances and future prospects, such a deal will not only raise the level of play of the current defense, but will put the Vikings at No. 1

for years to come.

During his first three seasons, Ramsay allowed opposing rebate ratings of 76.6, 66.4 and 73.8 on throw-in (PFF) coverage. In 2017, he ranked as the NFL's second-best cornerback in pass coverage and 14th-best in tackles. He was fifth in interceptions and 11th in rushing passes.

Last year, the Jaguars began to worsen about Marrone and Ramsay's ratings slipped – though he still ranks as the 24th best corner in the NFL. Some speculate that the Jags have used more coverage of the area with Ramsay than in previous years.

In the past, Rhodes was the Ramsey version of the Vikings, but last season Rhodes ranked 72nd out of 78 corners in PFF grades. Against Green Bay last week, the veterans' corner gave up seven completions on seven targets for 93 yards and punished an interference pass. His estimates last year were strongly influenced by the high number of distress calls.

Given Mike Zimmer's past success with rotating strikes, Ramsay is likely to become a Viking Island corner, allowing him to jump right into the defense system. He would give the Vikings the missing piece to return to the 2017 form when they ranked No. 1 in the NFL in points allowed and yards allowed.

As for the issue of project capital abandonment, the Vikings will receive a 25-year-old star who is likely to remain at the top of his game for another five to seven years. There are more questions than answers in the forward corner. Will the Vikings re-sign Tray Waynes and McKenzie Alexander? Will Mike Hughes Become Best Player? Ramsey will need a new contract, but the Rhodes hat space open will allow the Vikings to keep it long.

The Vikings made a similar profit move now when they traded a first-round pick for Sam Bradford in 2016. Despite giving

one worry for Ramsay is his volatile personality, but Zimmer has a lot of experience in the past with players like Adam Jones and Vontaze Burfitt. Recently, players have signed long-term deals and returned to stay in the Viking culture. And if he just wants to win, they still have a great chance of winning the NFC North with the Packers, Bears and Lions, all showing weaknesses.

With star players taking their own future in their own hands, the Vikings can be a major beneficiary of their success over the past five years at Zimmer.
