FRISCO, Texas – With contract contracts focused primarily on Ezekiel Elliott and Duck Prescott, the Dallas Cowboys have agreed to a 5-year extension with another key piece, the right decision of La & El Collins, according to Adam Schaeffer by ESPN. The deal that connects Collins to the Cowboys over the next six years will turn him into one of the NFL's top five paid right tackles, according to Schefter.
Two weeks ago, the Cowboys signed linebacker Jason Smith to a five-year, $ 64 million extension with a guaranteed $ 35.3 million.
The Collins deal is a little more surprising because of the contracts the Cowboys have envisioned for Pro Bowl offensive linemen Tyron Smith, Travis Frederick and Zack Martin. All three are among the highest paid in their positions, which seems to make Collins' detention difficult, while striving to retain Elliott, Prescott, Amari Cooper and others. Smith is in the middle of an eight-year, $ 96 million deal, Frederick is in the middle of a six-year, $ 56 million deal, and Martin signed a six-year, $ 84 million deal last year.
This is the third contract Collins has signed with the Cowboys. He initially joined the team as an undeclared free agent in 2015. In 2017, he signed a two-year extension that included $ 15.4 million in guaranteed money. This year he had to make $ 8.5 million.
On Monday, Collins was asked about his decision to join the Cowboys in 2015.
"Obviously, I think this is one of the best things that happens to me. "Collins said to me." For me, this has extended my coaching career, which I've been able to receive since I'm here, working with coach Frank (Pollock) the way he helped me develop as a player, the way Coach (Mark) Colombo helped me develop as a player. Just learning some things from these guys, learning things from veterans when I got here really helped me. I wouldn't trade it for the world. So I'm excited to be where I am in my career right now I'm entering Year 5, Year 3 on the right. I'm just ready to go out there and show what a player I am this year and what a band we are as a group. "
Collins started 46 of the 47 games he played for the Cowboys, including the last 32 on the right. He started just three guard games in 2016 because of a finger injury and started 11 games as a rookie.
The Cowboys are still hoping to make deals with Elliott and Prescott before the season opens on Sunday. The talks with Cooper have not made much progress, but something could still be developed during the season.
Of the three contracts, Elliott may be the most close because the parties worked to reach an agreement over the weekend. They held their first workout Monday in preparation for the Giants game; the players are off on Tuesday.
