The futuristic SpaceX spacecraft looked like it landed on Wednesday, but then exploded on the landing site with so much force that it was thrown into the air.
The failure came just minutes after SpaceX announced success. Two previous test fields landed in fireballs.
The full-scale prototype of Elon Musk’s Mars-designed spacecraft rose more than six miles (1
The gleaming bullet-shaped rocket ship remained intact this time when touched, prompting SpaceX commentator John Insprucker to say that “the third time is a charm, as they say,” before SpaceX stopped broadcasting the test.
But then the Star Ship exploded and was thrown into the air before crashing into the ground with flames.
There was no immediate comment from SpaceX about what went wrong. But Musk looked on the bright side in a tweet: “Starship 10 landed on one piece!” RIP SN10, honorary. ”
He added: “The SpaceX team is doing a great job! One day the real measure of success will be that Starship flights are commonplace. “
Musk plans to use Starships to send humans to the moon and Mars.
The last two prototypes reached similar high altitudes in December and February, but crashed into the ground in Boca Chica, Texas, and exploded.
Each of these last three flights lasted six and a half minutes.
