The New Orleans Pelicans acquired Stephen Adams of the Oklahoma City Thunder, according to The Athletic̵

7;s Shams Charania. The Pelicans lost current Utah Jazz Derrick Favors starting agency to a free agency earlier Friday and have since found a replacement. Technically, the deal will be folded into the Jrue Holiday blockbuster, as well as a night trading project between the Pelicans and the Nuggets. The Nuggets sent a protected future first tour of the Pelicans in exchange for the rights to the RJ Hampton project, which they initially picked up with a pickaxe from Milwaukee. This future champion and pair of second round go to Thunder, according to Adrian Voynarovski from ESPN.

Adams is expected to start for Pelicans before the 2019 Jackson Hayes lottery, which is still only 20 years old and quite raw. He only has one year left on the contract, and that opens the door for the Pelicans to promote Hayes and let Adams walk if Hayes wins the long-term job. If not? Pelicans will have full bird rights over Adams and therefore the ability to return it above the wage limit.

The Thunder, meanwhile, took over Al Horford’s contract earlier in the week. Last season, he played strongly ahead in Philadelphia, but this experiment proved unsuccessful. The Thunder were clearly planning to attack in the middle, even their wing attacks ended up centrally. That they have raised additional draft capital for an expiring contract, which they did not plan to keep, is the cherry on top. Thunder continues to stockpile at an unprecedented rate.

Adams has spent his entire career at Thunder. It was the last remaining part of James Harden’s trade, still on the Oklahoma City list. Now that he’s gone, the Thunder can really start this new era. It will be a long time before we see the finished product, but the recovery is in full swing in Oklahoma City.
