Suspected of Hezbollah spying on investigative targets in New York, other major cities: prosecutors



A New Jersey man has been accused of being a secret operator of Hezbollah in the United States for more than a decade, investigating potential attack sites in New York, Boston and Washington, prosecutors said Thursday.

42-year-old Alexei Saab of Moristown has been indicted on nine counts in connection with a number of alleged terrorist activities. These included providing material support to a foreign terrorist organization (FTO) and receiving military training from that group, the Ministry of Justice said.

"Although Saab was a naturalized American citizen, his true allegiance was to Hezbollah, the terrorist organization responsible for decades of terrorist attacks that killed hundreds, including American citizens and military," said U.S. Attorney Jeffrey S. Berman. "Fortunately, Saab is now in federal detention and facing significant prison time for his alleged crimes."

Saab has reportedly viewed dozens of sites across New York, including the Empire State Building, Rockefeller Center, Statue of Freedom, Times Square and United Nations headquarters, prosecutors said.

He also examined various bridges, tunnels and airports, focusing specifically on "the structural weaknesses of the sites it examined to determine how a future attack could cause the greatest destruction", Ministry of Justice

Court documents show that Saab has allegedly taken photographs from various locations, including the Brooklyn Bridge, Verazano-Narause Bridge, George Washington Bridge, Federal Plaza and other government buildings.

In 2003, Saab allegedly provided intelligence and photographs from the Port Authority Bus Terminal, Grand Central Terminal, New York Stock Exchange, Federal Plaza and the area's airports to Hezbollah, according to court documents.
