Taika Waititi hits the high seas like the fearsome pirate Blackbeard in the upcoming HBO Max comedy series “Our flag means death” Diversity has learned.
Whitey joins the previously announced host series Reese Darby. Prior to that, the couple worked together on the HBO series “Flight of the Conchords” and the movie “What We Do in the Shadows.” Darby is involved in both projects, with Whitey serving as the screenwriter and director of HBO and the star, co-writer, co-director and producer of the film.
It was previously announced that Waititi would perform and direct the pilot for “Our Flag Means Death” when the series was commissioned to air in September 2020. The show is based on the true adventures of Stede Bonnet (Darby), a spoiled aristocrat who abandoned his life of privilege to become a pirate.

Whitey won the Oscar for best original screenplay for “Jojo Rabbit,” which he also directed and starred as Adolf Hitler. The film was also nominated for Best Picture this year. He is also known for directing the MCU film “Thor: Ragnarok” and is currently working on the sequel “Thor: Love and Thunder”. He previously directed the final of Season 1 of The Mandalorian, where he won an Emmy nomination, as he also voiced the droid IG-11. He was also ready for an Emmy in 2020, when the FX adaptation of the series “What We Do in the Shadows” won approval for best comedy series.

“Our flag means death” comes from writer, showrunner and executive producer David Jenkins. Gareth Bash and Dan Halsted also act as executive producers with Whitey.
