At least 19 people in Costa Rica have died after having used alcohol contaminated with toxic levels of methanol, local authorities said. in June of what appeared to be poisoning with methanol, reports Tico Times.
The Ministry of Health warns against the use of alcohol from a number of brands, as samples have shown a positive result for methane counterfeiting.
More than 30,000 bottles of alcohol suspected of being contaminated have been confiscated by the government, according to CNN.
According to the World Health Organization, traces of methanol are common for fermented beverages – but higher concentrations, such as when methanol is deliberately added, can be lethal. Poisoning with methanol can cause a number of side effects, ranging from headaches and dizziness to seizures, coma and blindness, to the Centers for Disease Control.
