The purpose of writing this article is to tell you my experience with Tesla's program and why I think  I have been talking and writing about cars since 1974. I was very interested in the transition from driving the rear wheels to the front wheel drive. There was such a big change in the industry. But compared to the transition from gas-powered to electric, it is small
Front-wheel drive cars use less gas and have a little better fuel economy but do not interfere with the oil industry or threaten to ruin the thousands of engineers and manufacturing assistants in the automotive industry. No, it's a much bigger transition.
I was interested in this transition from around 2010. By then I had heard of electric cars, but I really thought they were a joke. But I remember some articles about the upcoming Nissan Leaf and Chevrolet Volt. The gas reached almost $ 5 a gallon, and I wanted to try something to save money.
My brother-in-law in Brazil said that many people convert taxis there to use natural gas, which saves a lot of money, but if the installer misplaced your car exploded. It did not sound very safe. I looked in the only car that used natural gas, the Honda Civic GX, and that sounded much safer. I found that there were only a few stations in Tampa, and I thought this could be a problem, but the range was good at about 250 miles.
The sheet and the Volt could be loaded into my house, which sounded much easier and the cost savings were similar. I did not worry about long trips, as I would take my Honda Odyssey for them. So I decided to buy Sheet or Volt. Both went out at the same time and I took the paper for 3 reasons.
- The leaves sat at 5 and Volt sat down 4. I have a family of 5 so that the Leaves can take the whole family. It was not so important to my family, but it was better for the kids.
- I was (and somewhat still am) upset by GM for the rescue.
- The sheet was about $ 5,000 less, and I thought if I needed more range, I would sell cars to my wife.
So after 18 months I've been waiting to buy the list on December 1, 2012, making me one of the first EV owners in Florida (apart from a few owners of Tesla Roadster and people who have turned their cars into their garages). I was invited to the AAA local office at the opening of their Level 2 chargers and were interviewed by several local TV stations. I stressed that the car was "normal". It was pretty fast from the start and very quiet, and of course the emissions were not free. In a conversation with hundreds of people about my Leaf (and maybe one million of the morning news), I convinced my manager to buy Leaf through a $ 199 lease. Most people felt it was a good idea but did not like the style or inconvenience of short distances and had to find charging stations.
When I heard that the Tesla 3 model came out for $ 35,000 Be fast, good looking and you have more than 200 miles from the range I was interested in. He does not care enough to get in line or give up work but is interested enough to go online to leave a $ 1000 hour reservation before it's revealed. Do not forget that I paid more than $ 35,000 for my best list! I figured if I could get Tesla for the same or a little more money, that would be a good deal!
When it came to configuring my order, 2 years later, I was disappointed that the $ 35,000 vehicle was not available and either I would have to buy a more expensive model or wait a little longer. I discussed it with my wife, and although I wanted the short-range model, she still wanted the model with a long range. We decided to choose one color (I spoke it in Midnight Silver) and she spoke to me with performance wheels, saying the aero wheels looked awesome. Since I really do not drive much on the highway, I was unsolved on the Enhanced Autopilot, but I decided to take it because I really want a full drive when it comes out and you save $ 1,000 to buy it in the front (now saves When I get the car, that was everything I hoped would be – fast, fun and good looking As I wrote before, people were much more interested in Model 3 than they were in the Lead – almost everyone who they see and drive in the car comment on how they see this future and they will buy an electric car in the future yah are not ready to go today.It is quite different to absorb all this new technology I understand.I felt the same way I first saw the iPhone It was tidy, but I could not understand how it would change everything  I was reading CleanTechnica for years and I was seriously considering an EV conference where they took part in Cocoa, FL. Unfortunately, the conference was during the week and I did not want to takes time to rest to go to her. But I wanted to meet with some of the EV experts who worked at CleanTechnica . When I read that Zahari had returned to Sarasota and had not yet run Model 3, I knew I should let him manage my own.
This was before you could go to a Tesla dealer and get them at any time. In July 2018, dealers still had no demonstrations. That's why I got up with my friends and had to meet Zacari! After this trip, Zachary encouraged me to start writing a little about the site. I had been popularizing Tesla on my Facebook time line for years but the reception was not very hot. Most of my friends on Facebook did not like Tesla because they were getting help from the government and thought the company would fold as soon as the subsidies were over. I found when writing about a site that is for EV that you get a much better reception.
But what about the referral program?
Yes, I get a little story telling, but the point is to give you a context in which I did not start trying to get Tesla's references. I really have a long interest in EVs and just got into the random referral program.
My first 6 articles did not even include my referral code. Free Supercharging is good only for S and Model X (later added Model 3), and I thought everyone I know and read my articles can not afford this expensive car.
This changed on October 6, when Tesla expanded the referral program to allow ALL Model 3s buyers to get free Supercharging! I knew the $ 49,000 vehicle with tax credit, gas savings, and maintenance was available to many more people so I began to include my referral code in my articles while encouraging people to use codes of people they know personally . I did not know if people would use it, but I thought I could turn it in if they did not know the Tesla owners.
The reward I really wanted was to be invited to the Y model (5 references). Things changed a lot in 3 months. As I mentioned last week, I now have 75 referrals and I have found that there are secret levels that allow you to get discounts for the upcoming Tesla Roadster. It turns out that I get 1 Roadster for free and 1 with a 40% discount. I hope to get some more referrals in the next 2 weeks so I can get a bigger discount for the second Roadster. Roadster's taxes and insurance may be quite high, so it may be difficult to afford it, even if it's free, so most people who have many referrals are trying to get 2 so they can sell one to pay taxes on the other – and thus can keep it. Otherwise, most will have to sell it instead of managing it.
For each referral someone in my position gets another 2% of the Roadster's cost of the founder, which is expected to cost $ 250,000. So, every referral costs $ 5,000 before tax, about $ 2,500 after tax. Unfortunately, the benefits to the buyer are smaller. The 6-month Free Supercharging (9 months if you have not tested Model 3) costs about $ 200, provided you use it for 1000 miles per month for 6 months instead of charging at home for 13 cents per kWh. So while the lower level prizes of equal buyer and the reference side, larger rewards are much large for the referrer. This encourages bad behavior, such as people who advertise their referral codes and sponsorship programs, so people can use someone else's forwarding code. The problem is that it is both expensive and expensive, and the brand looks like a multilevel marketing trick.
Let's play with some numbers. If Tesla sells 400,000 cars next year, and each person uses a forwarding code from an owner who buys Roadster, they will give up to $ 2 billion in concessions for 8,000 routers. That's about Tesla's double expected earnings next year. That would be a serious problem.
Now this would only happen if all references were given by a group of 8000 super referrals. In 2018, Tesla sold 245,240 vehicles. If they were allocated to a 2450 super referral, it would cost Tesla $ 1.2 billion in Roadster Discounts. Instead, as you can see from this site, it seems to have been distributed to about 75 people (including myself) who are likely to receive about 100 free or highly reduced Roadsters costing Tesla about $ 25 million or just about 2% of the potential. cost. But I think four things worry Tesla:
- Over time, more owners unlock the secret level and cost the company considerable money.
- The publicity of bad actors and the unfairness of benefits between buyers and small referrals and big referees (like me) would be bad for the brand.
- Giving too many free roadster would hurt the image of this car. If we want to keep our exclusive attractiveness, they can not build and distribute too many of them.
- Giving a free load encourages people to fill instead of charging at home. This is not the way the system is designed, and many more Tesla can lead to overcrowding next year.
I think it's a good decision that Tesla ends the referral program for all the reasons I explained above. I promoted EVS before the referral program and will continue to promote it after it is over.
But I will admit that somehow I changed my behavior. Encourage me to write more about Tesla and less for the rest of the EP (though, frankly, in the US it was not much more exciting than the Model 3 explosion in sales). I have a few articles on other topics (hybrids, solar energy, etc.) that I have delayed to focus on Tesla because the referral program is a limited time option.
