So now we know that the Avengers have postponed the release of their first character since the launch, Kate Bishop, from late October to some time in November (please, please be before the start of the next generation).
In particular, Crystal Dynamics has not yet explained something that seems pretty clear about not only the next two characters, but a bunch of upcoming ones.
How will Kate Bishop differ substantially from Hawkeye, given that they are both archers?
But it’s not just this couple. It looks like Avengers will do something like “echo fighter” from Smash Bros., where you have similar characters who are practically different versions of each other. We saw an expired, very long list of potential upcoming characters that the game is considering, with many potential echo pairs there. In addition to Kate and Hawkeye, we have:
- The Iron Man – a war machine
- Black Widow – Ridiculer
- Captain Marvel – Mar-Vel
And then others could to be an echo-pairing
- Hulk – She-Hulk
- Captain America – Winter Soldier
- Ant-Man – Wasp (although Wasp can fly)
But the idea is for many of these characters, if they are “echo fighters”, they will probably share sets of moves, albeit perhaps with some tweaks. As of now, you really can’t have a War Machine without its Gatling Gun, but will there be Iron Man repellents and missiles?
So this is the first question the game has to answer, how these sets of moves will differ between echoes. But my question is based more on progress: alignment and gear.
In Smash Bros. you just take an echo fighter and play with them. In Avengers, you have to level the characters to 50 to unlock their full range of moves, then you have to set them to 150 powers, which takes a huge amount of materials for farming and upgrading, and even a currency like Polychoron for artifacts. E none from what is shared between these echo signs? I can’t imagine spending a huge amount of time getting Kate Bishop to 50/150, only for Hawkeye to arrive a month later and he has two different types of arrows, but I still have to start the process over.
Again, since we do not yet have answers to any of this, I cannot say for sure that this will be a problem. But there certainly is potential to be a problem if something happens that I’m worried about. I don’t mind the existence of echo characters, but I played this game with a metric tone and just got my fourth character over 145. This process for each character has to come out, far in terms of time investment, if the idea is really a dozen or more characters appear over time, including some who have mirrored each other. Maybe we’re still too far away for Crystal Dynamics to handle this, but I think it’s important anyway.
