Sri Lanka’s beauty queen, who caused a scandal over the crown, has been arrested as a result of stage fights, police said on Thursday.
“Mrs. World” ruler Caroline Jury was arrested on charges of “simple injury and crime” in connection with the chaos on Sunday night at a competition in Colombo, the BBC reported.
A jury from Sri Lanka started making noise when she jumped on stage when they crowned the new “Mrs. Winner from Sri Lanka” Pushpika De Silva “, the outlet announced.
She snatched the crown from De Silva’s head, claiming that she was in fact divorced and thus disqualified from holding the title.
“There is a rule that prevents women who are already married and divorced, so I am taking steps to get the crown to take second place,”
Instead, Jury placed the crown on the runner-up, causing tears and a phrase on stage.
De Silva had to be hospitalized to be treated for head injuries after the failure, the BBC reported.
She later told reporters that she would take legal action for the “unreasonable and insulting” way she was treated, the BBC reported.
Police confirmed on Thursday that they had arrested Jury and another athlete in connection with the fight.
“Police have arrested Caroline Jury and model Chula Padmendra in connection with Sunday’s incident on charges of insult and crime,” police spokesman Ajit Rohana told the BBC.
The organizers of the competition renamed De Silva and apologized for the incident.
“We are disappointed. “Caroline Jury’s behavior on the scene was disgraceful and the ‘Mrs. World’ organization has already launched an investigation into the matter,” event organizers said.
