The asteroid called 2013 MD8 is expected to pass past the Earth at just over 3 million kilometers or about 13 times the distance between the Earth and the Moon at 12:55 on Tuesday  The vast cosmic rock is expected to make a "close approach" to Earth, but its trajectory must see it safely.
NASA believes that the asteroid is "dangerous" if they are within 4,600,000 miles of our planet.
Asteroid MD8 falls into the "Near Earth" category (NEO), which NASA describes as all asteroids and comets that travel about 30 million miles from Earth.
NASA tracks these and other Earth-related objects (NEO) to track potential incoming threats.
However, there is little to worry about even MD8
The massive asteroid, called 2013 MD8, will jump past the Earth at a dazed speed of 30,422 miles per hour. It falls into the category established by NASA's near-ground objects
With a diameter that is close to 280 feet, the Asteroid 2013 MD8 competes with the Big Ben's clock tower at its 320 foot height. The space rock probably falls in the category of the nearby object
"No man in the last 1000 years has been killed by a meteorite or the effects of a stroke," scientists from the NASA laboratory explained. ,
"NASA does not know about an asteroid or comet that is currently in a collision with the Earth, so the probability of a big collision is quite small. "In fact, the best we can say is that a large object is unlikely to hit the Earth at any time in the next few hundred years," they continued. The Agency believes that out of more than 600,000 known asteroids in our solar system, approximately 16,000 are NEOs. MD8 also falls into the category of a "potentially dangerous object," which is the one that reaches a minimum distance of less than .05 au from the Earth, and has an absolute magnitude (H) of 22.0 or brighter.
Asteroid 2013 MD8 has an absolute magnitude of 24.2.
NASA will not be able to divert an asteroid if it directs itself to the Earth but can mitigate the impact and take measures to protect life and property.
This will include evacuation of the impact zone and the moving key infrastructure.
The discovery of the orbital trajectory, the size, shape, mass, composition and dynamics of rotation will help experts determine the severity of the potential impact. The key to reducing damage is to detect any potential threat as early as possible.
Currently, NASA is moving forward with a freezer ship that is capable of preventing a collision of asteroids with the Earth. A small asteroid test without threat for 2024 is planned
This is the first mission to demonstrate a technique for deflecting asteroids for planetary protection.
The Dual Asteroids Shift (DART) test will use what is known as a kinetic impact technique – an asteroid blow to displace its orbit.
The impact would change the speed of a threatening asteroid with a small fraction of its overall speed, but by doing so much before the predicted impact, this little pressure will add. up over time to a major change in the asteroid's path from the Earth
