LONDON – The developers of Cyberpunk 2077 are pushing for the release of new content for the game to focus on debugging and crashes.
Polish game developer and publisher CD Projekt launched the long-awaited sci-fi epic last month. He has been the subject of fierce criticism for releasing what many fans and critics saw as an unfinished game.
Cyberpunk was one of the highest-end high-budget video games in 2020. But it was hit by a number of bugs and declines in the performance of older consoles such as Sony̵
CD Projekt tried to reassure fans with the promise of refunds and game improvements. But that hasn’t stopped Sony from removing Cyberpunk from its digital PlayStation Store – a move that many industry analysts say is unprecedented for a triple A title.
Marcin Iwinski, co-founder of CD Projekt, apologized in a video posted on the game’s YouTube channel on Wednesday.
“Despite the good reviews for the computer, the console version of the Cyberpunk 2077 does not meet the quality standard we wanted it to meet,” Ivinsky said. “I and the entire management team deeply regret this and I have this video in public.”
“Please do not blame any of our teams for what happened,” he added. “They are all incredibly talented and hardworking.
“The board and I are making the final decisions and that was our call to let the game go. Although, believe me, we never intended anything like this to happen.”
Iwiński explained that much of the game’s problems with older hardware are the result of his big ambitions for a computer. Cyberpunk is “huge in scope,” he said, packing “a variety of custom objects, interoperable systems, and mechanics” into “one big city and in a relatively free environment.”
“We made it even harder for ourselves by making the game look epic on PCs and then adapting it to consoles, especially old genes like PS4 and Xbox One,” he added.
Iwiński said the planned CD Projekt release of free downloadable content or DLC to accompany the main game would be delayed as developers race to fix many problems and crashes that players have experienced.
“We decided to focus on the most important fixes and updates first, and then we will release the DLCs,” said the co-founder of CD Projekt.
He added that versions of the game for Sony consoles and the next generation of Microsoft will be released in the second half of the year. Currently, gamers can only play Cyberpunk versions for PS4 and Xbox One on the new PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X systems.
Shares of CD Projekt rose 2% on Thursday morning. The stock of the game maker has fallen by about 38% since the launch of Cyberpunk on December 10.
“We take this whole situation very seriously and are working hard to fix it,” Ivinsky said on Wednesday. “Our company’s guiding principles are still at the heart of what we do, we still want to make amazing games and have open communication with you, our players.”
In addition to the controversy surrounding the failed launch of Cyberpunk, CD Projekt has also faced accusations of a “culture of crisis,” a common problem in the gaming industry that sees developers work long hours to finish a game on time. Cyberpunk was entertained three times before its release.
“The team is working to make appropriate adjustments to the game, without mandatory overtime,” CD Projekt Red, are you adding Red here? said in a news update on Wednesday. “Avoiding a crisis on all our future projects is one of our top priorities.”
