ESTES PARK, Colorado (CNN) – After a big breakfast at a restaurant in Colorado, a generous customer left his employees a $ 1,400 tip and a message reading “COVID Sucks!”
Notchtop Bakery & Cafe owner Nayla Hametvalieva says the patron, whom she only identified as David, entered her restaurant in Estes Park on Wednesday for a few eggs, bacon, sausages and biscuits and sauce.
When it came time to pay the $ 20.04 check, David asked his server how many people were working that day.
In the end, he left a $ 1,400 tip with instructions to give $ 200 to each of the seven employees.
“It brought real tears to all the servers [and] chefs – you know, no one ever thinks of chefs ̵
She said David lives in the area, but this is only the second time he has been to the restaurant.
Gloria Fuentes waited for David both times when he entered, and told CNN affiliate KMGH she couldn’t believe it when she saw the bill.
I was like, “Oh God, am I dreaming or what’s going on?” “, Fuentes told KMGH.
Another server told KMGH that the money would be a great help to her family.
“It’s $ 200 for me, but it’s also $ 200 for my husband. It’s also $ 200 for my daughters, for things we needed,” said James Johnson.
Hametvalieva has never closed the restaurant she has run for nearly 10 years because of the COVID-19 pandemic, but said the business is difficult. Last year’s fires also contributed to the challenge.
She said she was able to give hours to all her employees and also received a PPP loan.
Estes Park is about 70 miles outside of Denver, and Hametvalieva says she gets a lot of business this summer from tourists outside the country.
She said many of these customers bought gift cards in support of the restaurant because they were unable to come in person.
“I wanted to thank everyone who actually has feelings for small business and people have been so grateful, kind and kind. They have a big heart, especially David,” she said.
