EVERETT – Snohomish County has its first confirmed case of measles in the latest epidemic – a teenager who attends North Creek High School in the Bothell area.
The Sanohism Health Department has published on Wednesday a list of places and dates that it has been since it is infected. From 5 to 12 May these places include school, three long stays at the Starbucks Kiosk at Safeway at 24040 Bothell Everett Highway, AMC Woodinville 12, Top Pot Donuts at Bothell and other shops and restaurants. Anyone on these sites during certain hours may have been exposed.
The Northstor School Region called families to monitor children for signs of the disease. The infected student was not in school this week.
"We're going to turn to parents, especially those who have exceptions to vaccination," said Dr. Mark Beatty at a press conference on Wednesday.
Later in the day, the area said in a web post: "We've gotten in touch with the St Crick (high school) families who have students who have not received the vaccination. These pupils will be excluded from school until June 3, with no further cases being confirmed. "
The North Creek case is one of five recently confirmed in West Washington. Two were in the King County, and two were in Pierce County. These four cases are related to adults, said Dr. Cathy Lofi, a state health official.
One person was completely immune and one was not immunized, Lofi said on Wednesday. The other three vaccination statuses are unknown. Officials do not specify where these patients live.
Of the five, one was hospitalized, she said.
Lofi said the new cases are not related to an earlier epidemic in Clark County, where most of the diseases are among children.
"It's very likely we can see extra cases here in Washington," she said.
All five recently infected people have spent time at the Seattle-Tacoma International Airport during the probable period of exposure or contagion.
The first case since the last outbreak of measles was confirmed on May 12, a 40-year-old Pierce County man who was not hospitalized. The second resident of Pierce County was confirmed on Wednesday. The 50-year-old man is also not hospitalized.
Measles is highly contagious and can be serious. It easily spreads when an infected person talks, coughs or sneezes.
Vaccination against measles, mumps and rubella is the best means of prevention, Lofi said.
"It is important that everyone check their immunization status," she said.
The vaccine is 93 percent effective after a single dose and 97 percent effective after two doses.
As long as Governor Jay Insley has entered law earlier this month, Washington's parents will no longer be able to claim a personal or philosophical release of their children from receiving a combined vaccine against measles, mumps, and rubella before visiting day center or school. The new law enters into force at the end of July.
Last year, 90% of all children's homes in Snooshish County received a vaccine against MMR, according to the State Department of Health. Northshore ranks fifth among the Snohomish County School District, with a vaccination rate of 91.1%. The Edmunds School District has the highest percentage of 92.3%. The lowest is Stanwood-Camano at 79.1%.
There were 77 cases of measles across the country in 2019, according to the State Department of Health. Of these, 52 are aged 1 to 10 years. 15 are aged 11 to 18 years old. Of the 71 cases reported in Clark County.
Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reported that this year, as of May 10, 839 cases of measles in 23 countries were registered. This is the largest number reported in the United States since 1994 and since measles was declared to be eliminated in 2000.

The measles virus passes through the air. He stays for up to two hours in the air of a room with a measles person.
You can catch measles from an infected person for another four days before having a rash and within four days after a rash occurs.
Symptoms beginning seven to 21 days after exposure include fever, diarrhea, cough, runny nose, fatigue, and red, watery eyes.
A few days later a rash begins, which usually starts from the face and can spread throughout the body.
Measles usually last for seven to ten days.
If you have been exposed to a potential exposure, call a healthcare professional if you develop a disease with fever or unexplained rash.
Do not go to a clinic or hospital without calling first to say you think you have measles.
