The first human case of West Nile virus has been confirmed windsoriteDOTca News



A resident of Windsor-Essex County tested positive for West Nile Virus according to the health department.

This is the first clinically diagnosed and confirmed laboratory case of humans for 2019 in our region and the fourth in Ontario. [19659002] Health officials say that most people with West Nile virus never develop symptoms and will not know they have the virus. Only about 20% of people develop symptoms of West Nile fever with less than 1

% develop severe neuroinvasive disease. Mosquito species capable of spreading the West Nile virus have been identified throughout the area through the Health Unit Monitoring Program.

The virus is transmitted by mosquitoes that feed on infected birds. This positive human case is a reminder to residents to continue to be protected from exposure.

"Although the evening gets colder, it is still important that everyone eliminates any standing water around their home / property and take personal protective measures to avoid mosquito bites in the fall months," said Dr. Ahmed , Health Officer, Windsor – Essex County Health Department.
