The head of the US coronavirus vaccine effort says the first immunizations could take place on December 12. The Food and Drug Administration Advisory Committee will meet on December 10 to discuss the request of Pfizer Inc. for an emergency authorization for the COVID-19 vaccine under development. Pfizer and German partner BioNTech recently announced that the vaccine appears to be 95% effective in preventing mild to severe COVID-19 disease in a large, ongoing study. Moncef Slavey, head of Operation Warp Speed, the coronavirus vaccination program, says plans are to deliver vaccines to the states within 24 hours of the expected FDA approval. Slavey told CNN he expected vaccinations to begin on the second day after approval, Dec. 12. +
