Alan Moore, a contemporary Saruman and creator of comic masterpieces such as Guards, V for Vendetta,, and From hell, has just signed a contract with a new book publisher and his upcoming art series sounds … well, just like the things Alan Moore is willing to write.
The author has signed with Bloomsbury UK, but the real news is his upcoming fiction. The first is a book of short stories entitled Illuminations, and the other, more epic work is a massive five-volume series with a title Long London. Official descriptions: “Illuminations is an amazing, rich and extensive collection of stories, each of which includes some kind of lighting or realization. From ghosts and otherworldly beings to the four horsemen from the apocalypse to Boltzmann’s brains that shape the universe in the Big Bang, Alan Moore Illuminations is a series of tempting and elegantly crafted tales that reveal the full power of imagination and magic. “
Then Long London is a “series about a ‘sometimes accessible city in the shadows that is out of time.’ This is an extremely inventive, atmospheric, mythical world of murder, magic and madness. It is a quintet of novels spanning the entire 20th century, beginning with the shocked and unraveled London of 1949 and tracing populations of writers, criminals, artists and wizards through this familiar city and version of London just beyond our knowledge. “
If you’ve read Moore’s 2016 solo novel. Jerusalem, which in itself was so labyrinthine that it could be “sometimes accessible”, Moore’s idea of having five volumes to tell a story is frightening, if not downright threatening. But Jerusalem he was pretty good, too, and Alan Moore remains Alan Moore, so both Illuminations and Long London especially they seem to be just more miracles in Moore’s canon. Right now, Bloomsbury is planning to release Illuminations in the fall of 2022 and the first volume of Long London sometime in 2024. Of course, it took Moore a whole decade to write Jerusalemso I still wouldn’t save the date.
