The Queen’s former chef paid tribute to Prince Philip, praising his impudent “sense of humor” and revealing that he believed the Duke of Edinburgh was Balmoral’s gardener for the first time when they met.

Darren McGrady, 58, who was the Queen’s personal chef in the 1990s and also worked for Princess Diana, shared a tribute to the late king in a video on his YouTube page, revealing that he once caught his daughter-in-law Princess Diana hiding in the royal kitchen, eating obvious.

The chef added that Prince Philip “loves to grill” and that he has an “adventurous” palette that often wants game from the mansion or dishes such as cypress souffle and devilish kidneys.

“In my first year, I worked in the kitchen and I was the only one there.

‘This old man came in, in tattered clothes and a really dirty sweater with all his elbows falling apart, and I thought he was the gardener.

Born in Britain but now based in Texas, Darren often shares stories from his life working for both the Queen and Princess Diana in the 1990s.

In the new video, he shares a recipe for Prince Philip’s favorite dessert, Crepe Islandaise, and reveals how the duke once caught Princess Diana hiding the royal kitchen.

Philip died at Windsor Castle earlier this month at the age of 99.

His funeral took place on Saturday in St. George’s Chapel with millions of people around the world who set out to mourn the royal.

“He also had a great sense of humor, I remember Princess Diana sitting in the kitchen, sitting on top of the freezer, and she was just doing lychees and talking about the theater and the Phantom of the opera.

“He would just think a steak was boring, he would say, ‘Let there be a rabbit or a partridge,’ all these different game from the manor.”

“And he was going to say, ‘Let’s make it, let’s make souffle for dessert,’ and you say, ‘Would you like chocolate or vanilla?’ And he says “let’s make a kipper”.

“Even at breakfast, he’d think eggs and bacon were just boring, he loved when you put smoked haddock or devil’s kidneys on the menu,” Darren continued.

“I remember we were at the Wood Farm once.” [Philip’s cottage on the Sandringham Estate] and he had lamb pods, little lamb eyes for dinner for him and his guests.

The chef, who has more than six million views on YouTube to share his royal tales and recipes, also recalled how great Philip was in cooking and loved to barbecue.

“He would enter the kitchen after afternoon tea, and all the cooks would shout, ‘The duke is down, the dukes are down,’ and they would just get ready to discuss with him what he wanted for dinner tonight.”

Darren’s delicious Drambuie chocolate mousse recipe

INGREDIENTS

6 ounces dark chocolate

10 fl oz heavy cream

5 egg yolks

5 proteins

1 tsp Instant coffee

2 tbs of Glenfiddich or Drambuie whiskey (which I use in the video) or a good whiskey

1 tbs of boiling water

METHOD

Melt the chocolate, being careful not to overheat it in a large bowl.

Put the coffee in a small bowl and dissolve in boiling water.

Beat the yolks in the chocolate and then add the dissolved coffee and whiskey and mix well.

Whip the cream until firm and the tops stick.

Beat the egg whites until firm and the tops stick.

Fold the cream with a metal spoon into the chocolate mixture, followed by the whipped egg whites.

Continue to fold until there are no white spots of cream or egg white and then pour into a decorative serving dish.

Place the mousse in the refrigerator for at least three hours to harden the chocolate.

The top can now be decorated with rosettes of whipped cream and chocolate curls to present a table.

This mixture makes enough for about eight servings of dessert.

“And you have to stay on top of everything when he walks into the kitchen and says, ‘What are we doing tonight and are there any strawberries in the garden?’ “It was a busy question.

“He knew there were strawberries in the garden, and he said you’d better know, too.” He did not suffer fools with pleasure. ‘

“Once in Sandringham we had mango Melba on the royal dinner menu.

“When the duke came into the kitchen and I was just peeling and slicing the mango, he was just standing there saying, ‘this is not the right way to peek at a mango.’

“And then he came and gave me a mango, scooped it up at the edges, and did the same, on the other side around the stone.”

“And he was so excited that he was so proud that he actually showed the chefs the right way to make mangoes,” he continued.

Darren also met the royal on secular occasions, saying he was “charming and elegant.”

“I remember the Ghillies prom at Balmoral Castle and I had to dance with him, the fragile white Sargent.”

Darren said they dance together and he just nodded and smiled.

Darren also shared how to make one of Philip’s favorite dishes Crepe Islandaise.

“He attended a banquet in Iceland and liked the dish so much that he asked for the recipe.

“And then, when he got it, he sent it to the kitchen.” He was so excited that we received this dish to be prepared by the royal chefs.

“He wanted it for many of his dinners.”

“Basically it’s just jam and cream mixed together in a pancake, simple and easy, but he really liked it.

He added that Prince Philip’s hat “loves its IPA, even at banquets”.
