HBO Max is updating its Apple TV app as it tries to fix the myriad problems that have plagued the software since last week. The update fixes significant issues with key features such as fast forwarding and rewinding that were introduced after the software was disconnected from using the native tvOS video player. The software update returns the native player.
“We’ve just released an update to our Apple TV app, restoring our own experience of playing the tvOS video you know and love, with more improvements to come,” HBO Max tweeted. “Ensuring HBO Max viewers a quality experience is our top priority, and we missed the point here.”

Although the worst of the issues seems to have been fixed, users of the HBOMax order report that some bugs remain after the new update. One user reported finding that their subtitles kept coming back to Spanish, for example. Fortunately, as another user pointed out, the new update makes it easier to rewind subtitles, a process that the previous update made significantly more difficult.
Questions remain about how such broken software was able to be released to users in the first place. Reply to tweet from The Verge’s Editor-in-Chief Nilay Panel, HBO Max’s EVP and general manager Andy Forsel acknowledged that this was a “million dollar issue” and that the company would investigate.
