The labor market is so good, new rentals are not showing for their first working day

"People get many offers on the market like they do today, and they don't show up on their first business day," says Paul MacDonald, senior executive at Robert Half.

He cited the strong labor market and the low unemployment rate as a reason for this influx of ghosts from new rents.

Steve Lindner, CEO of employment firm WorkPlace Group, was recently spooked by a new hire. The applicant accepted the offer and passed the background check.

"We had already shared the name with our support team and had a training program. Everything was ready to go," Lindner said.

And then no one appeared.

But at least this candidate called the next day to explain what had happened. Another new rental failed to show up on the first day 1

8 months ago and Lindner still has no idea what happened. "They just did not arrive. It was a complete job abandonment."

The company called, emailed, texted and eventually had to send a formal letter of resignation.

Non-arrival costs

The first working day peeling is not entirely new. This move tends to grow in hot job markets when job seekers have more power.

Jeremy Tolley, a senior employee at CareHere, said he began noticing more arriving in 2016. In the same year, he said a dozen applicants did not show up for their first day. His company operates health and wellness centers throughout the country.

To tackle the problem, the company created a better career website and increased contacts with candidates leading up to their first day to establish more relationships. 19659012] Do you have a job offer? "We create a sense of obligation to this person," he said. "It's not just some company that they don't know much about, so they start thinking, 'If I don't show up, I'll let them go, I know they're expecting me and I'm getting ready.' [19659004] When a new employee doesn't show up, it means starting a costly and time-consuming hiring process. This also puts pressure on existing employees.

"The effect of morality is very real when one does not show up for the first business day," says McDonald. Employees often feel the fee when a position is vacant for a long period of time.

It is also not a good look when clients are informed of a new rental that is not appearing.

"This causes many internal problems. The employer relied on them and it can be frustrating if clients and customers were also waiting for arrival, "Lindner said.

Deserters beware

The job market is good right now, but it won't always be that way. Therefore, it is important to protect your brand and avoid burning bridges.

"When the job market turns … ghost candidates will have fewer job opportunities," Lindner warned.

Companies can take into account who did not show up for an interview or on the first day, and this may haunt you if you contact the same company again.

Plus it's a small world: you never know where you might come across that tenant or hiring manager you are later in your career.

Yes, it may be an awkward conversation, but call and let the employer know that you will not eventually join the team.

"Your own decision," Lindner said. "Most prudent people will understand. I may be disappointed as an employer that you initially accepted my job and rejected me, but I respect the call."

Telling an employer that you decide to take another job offer may also open the door to negotiation.

"We understand the industry we are in and what the market is," Tolly said. "Sometimes this allows us to counter the offer or find out why you have accepted another position. Maybe there's something we can do about it. "
