The new Chrome cache will speed up the back button

This will not make it faster to visit new websites, but Google says this kind of navigation back and forth is still quite common, accounting for 19% of the pages viewed in Chrome for Android and 10% for Chrome on PCs.

Sounds like a simple enough feature, but there are challenges related to it. Privacy, for example, as bfcache will have to ensure that there is no JavaScript to show on pages that are not actually there. And while the feature may have some benefit for battery life, as a paused page is less intense than rebuilding, it will likely be a high-memory process, which is generally a problem for Chrome.

As such, Google is looking to build it in Chrome in 2020, after tests this year. Safari and Firefox have been using this kind of caching for years ̵

1; Safari since 2002 and Firefox since 2005 – so Chrome is catching up here. But given the increasing focus on privacy and technological performance, he obviously wants to make sure it is right.
