New Pokémon Snap topped the UK physical retail charts during its debut week.
The game Switch sold over four times more copies when the original was released, which reached No. 9 in September 2000. The first game arrived in the middle of Pokémon mania, but it was the N64 title, which was a console struggling to sell in the UK (1, 5 million N64s were sold compared to 5.4 million PlayStation). Over time, the Pokémon Snap became a decent hit for the console.
Switch is significantly more successful than the N64, but even compared to newer games, the result looks good. The week of the launch of the new Pokémon Snap is 2.5 times longer than the last single game of Pokémon: Pokémon Mystery Dungeon: Rescue Team DX, which launches on the Nintendo Switch in March 2020.
This is the third biggest launch of the Switch of the year after Super Mario 3D World + Bowser̵
The game for photography was also comfortable in front of No. 2, which was another new edition in the form of an exclusive PS5 Returnal.
Sony’s game of cheating is the first significant PS5 title to be released at retail since its release, and has been heavily reviewed. However, its sales are below what we saw from the previous exclusive AAA PlayStation. Of course, there are more than a few caveats to consider: the PS5 is still in its early days in terms of installation base, the price of the game is high (average selling price is £ 68), it faces stiff competition from Resident Evil next week: Village and is in a niche genre.
And as with all PS5 games, we should expect sales to rise and fall as more consoles hit the market.
Last week, No.1, Nier Replicant ver.1.22474487139, fell to No. 22 after a 78% drop in weekly weekly sales.
Overall, it was a good week for retail with over 180,000 games sold. There were a number of game sales growing every week, including Super Mario 3D World + Bowser’s Fury at # 3 (sales increased by 10%), Mario Kart 8: Deluxe at No. 4 (by 6%), Minecraft at switch at # 7 by 7%), GTA 5 at No. 8 (an increase of 23%), Ring Fit Adventure at No. 9 (an increase of 6%) and Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War at No. 10 (up to 20%). The only two games that have fallen in sales in the Top Ten are Animal Crossing: New Horizons in 5th place (down 7%) and FIFA 21 in 6th place (down 23%).
This week there was another new release in the charts in the form of Terminator Resistance Enhanced on PS5, which has just entered the Top 40 at number 37.
Next week Resident Evil: Village will be number 1. Digital sales figures are not included in these charts.
