The first weekend series between the Mets and the Nationals has been postponed after four players from Washington tested positive for COVID-1

9. Initially, only Thursday’s opening game in Washington was postponed, but on Friday MLB decided to postpone the entire series of three games to allow additional testing and contact tracking. The national team was set to start the season without many players due to a positive test for COVID-19 and contact tracking.

National general manager Mike Rizzo spoke to reporters on Thursday night and again on Friday afternoon, saying there were a total of four confirmed players who tested positive and another five players plus one staff member in confirmed close contact. All nine are in quarantine after extensive follow-up of the club’s contacts, Rizzo added.

“I have the greatest confidence that it was not a player who violated the protocol,” Rizzo said of the club’s outburst.

MLB has not announced makeup dates. Last season, MLB postponed several games while sorting out the problems of COVID-19, so it’s no surprise that the Mets and Nationals won’t be playing their season-opening series this weekend. Thursday’s game was to include the best opening match of the day: Jacob de Grom vs. Max Scherzer.

The Mets have to face the Phillies for a three-game streak in Philadelphia starting Monday. The Mets have not had a problem with COVID and will probably play the series. Meanwhile, the Nats are currently ready to welcome the Braves in DC for a series of three games starting on Monday, although those games could also be affected.

Since it’s so early in the season and since the Mets and Nationals are rivals in the divisions with five direct series left after this weekend, it will be quite easy to plan makeup games. MLB will again play seven innings during double headers this year.

According to protocols from the league, the identity of the national players who have passed tests and are under quarantine has not been announced.

Last year, the Cardinals and Marlins were involved in MLB’s two most significant outbreaks of COVID-19. Both teams closed approximately two weeks with double-digit players and staff members with positive results in the first weeks of the reduced season 2020. The last few weeks of the regular season and post-season went smoothly, after which Justin Turner scored positively during the World Series Game 6.
