The subway was moving on an elevated and open part of the city’s rapid transit system on the newest line 12, also known as the Golden Line, when part of the overpass collapsed, the Mexican Secretariat for Risk Management and Civil Protection said.
Surveillance footage shows the moment of the collapse directly above a street with moving cars, followed by a cloud of dust and debris.
The incident happened at 22:25 local time, according to Mexican Interior Minister Alfonso Suarez Del Real.
Mexico City Mayor Claudia Scheinbaum arrived at the scene. “Firefighters, public safety personnel are working. Various hospitals are serving. We will give more information soon,” she said on her official Twitter account.
Speaking at the scene, Scheinbaum said a car remained locked under the rubble of the overpass, but rescue efforts were suspended as the subway was still suspended and unstable.
The mayor said emergency crews were waiting for a crane to arrive before rescuing efforts could continue.
This is an evolving story, more to come.
