The Philippine island has been put in a “state of disaster” since the typhoon

Philippine President Rodrigo Duterte has put the country’s main island, Luzon, in a state of emergency to speed up relief and rehabilitation efforts after Typhoon Vamco was hit last week.

Thousands of people in the worst-affected provinces of Cagayan and Isabella are in evacuation centers or shelters in makeshift roadside camps, authorities say.

The BBC’s Howard Johnson for the Philippines reports from Tugegarao in Cagayan province.
