Former President Barack Obama has said he “absolutely” plans to receive the Covid-19 vaccine when it is available.
In an interview with SiriusXM host Joe Madison, which is scheduled to air Thursday, Obama said that if Dr. Anthony Fauci, director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, said the coronavirus was safe, he believed it.
“People like Anthony Foci, whom I know and have worked with, have full confidence,” Obama said. “So if Anthony Fauci tells me that this vaccine is safe and can vaccinate, you know, it will immunize you from getting Kovid, I will absolutely take it.”;
“I promise you that when it is made for people who are less at risk, I will take it,” he added.
During the interview, Obama seemed to acknowledge the real problem with the vaccine’s hesitation, which some health experts worry may cause minorities who are less affected by the coronavirus pandemic to avoid a shot.
“I understand that you know from a historical point of view, everything dating back to Tuskigi’s experiments, and so on. why the African-American community would have some skepticism. However, the fact is that vaccines are the reason we no longer have polio, the reason we don’t have a whole bunch of children dying from measles and smallpox and diseases that used to destroy entire populations and communities, “he said.
Obama said he had no problem giving an example of getting a shot once it was available.
“Eventually, I can take it on TV or film it, just so people know I trust this science, and what I don’t believe is getting Covid.”
Some context: Previous studies have found that minority communities have higher mortality than Covid-19, are more exposed and most vulnerable in part because of existing conditions.
Obama also said that in addition to promising vaccines, another reason to hope is newly elected President Joe Biden and newly elected Vice President Kamala Harris.
“As for Covid now, apparently at the end of the day, one of the biggest things about the return of Joe Biden and Kamala Harris on January 20 is that they will then put in charge responsible scientists and medical experts,” he said.
