The grandmother, who died in a shooting Thursday at a Publix supermarket in Florida, had tried to stop the attacker before she was shot, authorities said on Friday.
The 69-year-old unidentified woman and her 1-year-old grandson were killed in the Royal Palm Beach Publix supermarket by attacker Timothy J. Wall, 55, who later committed suicide, was told by the Palm Beach Sheriff’s Office in a series of tweets.
“The suspect entered the production section where the victims were and pulled out his pistol,” PBSO tweeted.
“He shot the child,” another tweet said. “The grandmother intervened in the attacker and because of her brave actions, his traffic jam.
“After some torment, he eventually shot the grandmother, and then himself.
“That could have been prevented!”
The service notes that Wall posted on Facebook that he “wanted to kill people and children” and that “his wife said he was behaving strangely and paranoid.”
On Thursday, the PBSO said Wall did not know the victims and that no motive was known.
The identities of the woman and the boy – who would turn 2 this month – will not be made public by authorities, as the victims’ families are benefiting from a law allowing their names to be kept confidential, the ministry said.
