It wasn’t exactly the coronation she was looking for.
A beauty queen contestant won the Sri Lankan title over the weekend – only to end up in hospital with head wounds after Ms. World tore off her crown in a lock to give it to the runner-up.
The ugly melee on the stage erupted moments after the winning contestant Pushpika De Silva was awarded the title at the theater in Colombo on Sunday night, the Time 24 News outlet reports.
Ms. World Caroline Jurie, who is from Sri Lanka and was at the event, suddenly jumped on stage and grabbed the microphone, claiming that De Silva was actually divorced and thus disqualified from holding the title.
“There is a rule that prevents women who are already married and divorced, so I̵
Jury then ripped the gold crown from De Silva’s head and placed it in second place, causing tears and chaos, the shops said.
De Silva had to be hospitalized for head injuries from a torn crown, plus an injury, Time24 said, citing a local newspaper.
The contestant later posted a photo of herself in a hospital bed on her Facebook page – while denying that she was divorced.
“The pain in my skull when my crown was ripped from my head by the world’s married beauty queen, the pain I felt when I lost the crown …” De Silva wrote.
“I say that the real queen is not a woman who grabs another woman’s crown, but a woman who [helps straighten] another woman’s crown !!
“I know you are waiting for my response to the unexpected incident that happened. Although I have a lot to say, I will only publish the basics here, “De Silva said.
She admitted that she and her husband lived apart, but insisted, “I’m not a divorced woman.”
She has since been officially re-announced the winner, according to Newsfirst.
