These 14 countries must be “careful” with COVID now, warns the virus expert

There is currently something to celebrate about the COVID pandemic. As of April 30, 101.4 million people in the United States have been fully vaccinated, according to data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). That̵

7;s close to half the US adult population. And although some countries are the exception, the incidence of COVID has not been as low across the country since October 2020 as reported by the NPR. But in recent weeks, a worrying trend has emerged: The rate at which people are being vaccinated is slowing. According to a Wall Street Journal Analysis of CDC data, the United States administered about 2.8 million vaccines against COVID per day in the last week, compared to an average of about 3.2 million per day earlier in April.

Epidemiologist Michael Osterholm, MD, director of the Center for Infectious Disease Research and Policy at the University of Minnesota, expressed concern about the declining rate of vaccination recently. On April 29, his episode Update from Osterholm podcast, the infectious disease expert said that countries with a higher number of new cases and lower levels of vaccination are the ones that need to be “careful” right now.

“We are seeing vaccinations fall sharply in terms of new vaccinations. In the last four or five days, we have more people in this country vaccinated for a second dose than the first dose, which shows that the numbers are declining,” Osterholm explained. “We still have big holes there.”

“I just want us to be careful here,” Osterholm continued. “I know others will say it won’t go up, I blow it disproportionately. But you look at the numbers yourself. And when we look at that, we see in so many cases a situation where we have significant gaps in vaccination … Certainly some in the northwest, where we see fluctuations in the vaccine, others in the south, where we see fluctuations in the vaccine. So I’m just raising this issue right now that I think we need to be careful to accept that we’re ready. “

In particular, Osterholm identified 14 countries that need to be vigilant. To better understand how vaccination rates vary in these countries, we looked at Becker Hospital Examination, which calculates the percentage of people in each country who have been vaccinated using CDC vaccine follow-up data as of April 30. We then looked at COVID Act Now, the US risk tracking tool and vaccines COVID, to compile new case rates in the 14 countries that Osterholm has been worried about since April 30. We have also included the COVID Act Now vulnerability level for each country – some of which meet Osterholm’s concerns, while others do not.

Keep reading to find out which countries need to be careful, according to the virus expert. (By comparison, Maine currently has the highest vaccination rate at 39%, and California has the lowest incidence of new cases at 4.4 per 100,000 people.)
