Prescription drugs can be withdrawn for a variety of reasons. Sometimes they are contaminated with substances that make them dangerous, or they may have been mislabeled and put in the wrong packaging. However, the drug is rarely recalled because the company that makes it believes that it does not work as well as it should, but this is exactly what happens with Acella Pharmaceuticals and its thyroid tablets “NP Thyroid”
According to the company’s download bulletin, “routine testing” of the pills found them to be ineffective. The test results revealed that there was less than 90% of the appropriate amount of active ingredient (s), T3 and / or T4 thyroid hormones. The pills are used to treat hypothyroidism, which is a weakly active thyroid gland (hyperthyroidism is an overactive thyroid gland, but they are routinely confused). Now the company wants everyone with the affected drugs to return them.

The risks of using more potent thyroid medications are similar to leaving untreated thyroid disease. Over time, the medicine may not be enough to keep the symptoms, leading to problems that mimic an underactive thyroid gland. These may include sensitivity to cold, dry skin, depression, fatigue and swelling of the thyroid gland itself. People may also experience rapid weight gain or find it harder to lose weight.
The company says it has received at least 43 reports of “serious adverse events that may be related to this seizure,” but did not provide much detail about what those events were. If they worsen the symptoms of hypothyroidism, it would make perfect sense, as the drug was not powerful enough to prevent their recurrence.
The company’s advice:
Acella proactively notifies its recipients to stop distributing the above-mentioned batches that are being withdrawn and arranges for the return of all withdrawn products. Patients currently taking NP Thyroid® from the called batches should not discontinue use without contacting their healthcare provider for additional guidance and / or a replacement prescription.
There is an attached document on the download page with all batch numbers and expiration dates associated with this download. If you are taking NP Thyroid tablets in any dose from 15 mg to 120 mg, you should look at the list and see if the bottles you have match the withdrawn batches.
If you find that you do have some of the medicine you have withdrawn, do not stop taking it until you have contacted your healthcare provider and arranged for a replacement. The company has also provided its contact information on the download page in case you have questions or concerns about the download or medicine:
Users with download questions can email Acella Pharmaceuticals at firstname.lastname@example.org or contact our representatives at 1-888-424-4341, Monday through Friday from 8:00 in the morning – 5:00 p.m. ET.
