Thousands without electricity in the Madison area

Madison, Wisconsin ̵

1; Thousands of residents on and around the west side of Madison lost power due to a blown-up transformer on Friday night.

Alliant Energy said the accident happened at the intersection of McKee Road and Highway PD.

The outage began at 9:42 p.m., leaving more than 11,500 people without electricity. By 11:40 p.m., that number had been reduced to about 2,000. Full power is expected to return to all around midnight.

The interruptions also affected spectators in Verona and Middleton. Bruce Richards, director of facilities and engineering at Epic, said the software company in Verona was also affected by the outage.
