Three members of the National Air Force were killed in a plane crash in Tennessee



Three aviators were killed in a plane crash in Tennessee on Tuesday, the National Air Guard said.

The crash happened in McMinnville, Tennessee, about 75 miles southeast of Nashville.

The guard identified the victims as Lt. Col. Shelley Hutter; Captain Jessica Wright; and senior master sergeant. Scott Boompus. All three were members of the 118th Wing of the Tennessee National Guard.

The Air National Guard did not provide details about the cause of the incident. A witness said he saw the plane try to return to the airport before the crash, NBC affiliate Nashville WSMV reported. The three pilots were flying a Piper PA 28, licensed by the Lebanese Flying Club, which departed from McMinnville Airport, the National Transportation Safety Board said.

“Words cannot begin to explain the shock, grief, pain and anxiety we feel we have lost three remarkable members of our Guards family,”

; Colonel Todd Wiles, commander of the 118th Wing, said in a press release. “All three were dedicated to the service of our nation. Their families are in our hearts and our prayers.”

Tennessee Gov. Bill Lee tweeted on Wednesday that he was “incredibly saddened by the sudden and tragic loss of three airmen in yesterday’s crash.”
