The San Francisco 49ers on Monday officially added safety to Tony Jefferson with a one-year contract. ESPN’s Adam Shefter first announced the signing on Monday morning. In a move, the 49ers released defensive back Briean Boddy-Calhoun to keep his 91-man lineup.
Off-season lineups are usually limited to 90 players. The 49ers are given extra space on OL Alfredo Gutierrez’s accommodation list through the NFL International Pathway program.
Jefferson adds veteran depth to the crowded safety room, which includes many young, inexperienced players. He played 98 games and started 66 in seven NFL seasons after joining the Cardinals in 201
To make room for Jefferson, the 49 released Body Calhoun. He played in a special teams game for San Francisco last season as they dealt multiple injuries in the secondary. They re-signed Body Calhoun this season. The 28-year-old has played in 47 games with 22 starts in five NFL seasons.
