A state of Maryland is on leave after the shooting and murder of a 16-year-old boy.

According to Maryland State Police, shortly before 1:30 p.m. on Tuesday, the Leonardtown barracks received two separate 911 calls. A man reported that there was a man who behaved suspiciously, whom he thought had a gun.

Two minutes later, the second call from 911 came from another man who gave a street address in block 23000 on Hollywood Road. The caller said that the man was behaving suspiciously and thought he had a gun.

Police said the soldier reacted to the location and collided with Peyton Ham, 16, of Leonardtown in the alley, who was armed with a gun and a knife.

A witness told investigators they saw Ham in the alley in what the witness described as a “shooting range”, pointing a gun at the soldier, police said. The soldier fired on Ham, wounding him.

A second witness told investigators that after the soldier fired for the first time, they saw Ham pull out a knife and try to get up. The soldier ordered him to release the knife before firing again, police said.

Ham was transported to a district hospital, where he was pronounced dead, police said.

Police said they later found Ham was holding an Airsoft gun, which they said was a “close-up of an actual gun.” The replica gun and knife were found at the scene, police said.

Police said the participating soldier had been working with the MSP for two years and seven months.

The investigation is ongoing.
