Trump shared the image as he and Biden fought a fierce battle for older voters, a demographic feature that Trump conducted in 2016, but which, according to recent opinion polls, has distanced itself from the president. Biden, 77, tried to take advantage of the trend by traveling to a senior center in Florida on Tuesday to claim that the 74-year-old Trump ignored older Americans.
– You are a consumable. We are forgetful. You are practically nobody. That’s how he sees the elderly, ̵
Trump was the oldest president ever elected in 2016, when voters aged 65 and over strongly backed him because of Hillary Clinton, according to the original poll. Biden would beat Trump’s record if he won next month and bet on the same older voters to help him take him to the White House.
A recent Washington Post-ABC News poll found that the two candidates, the oldest ever nominated by their party, have a neck and a vote with voters aged 65 and over, with Biden 49 percent and Trump 48 percent. The race looks similarly tight in the key swing state of Florida, which has one of the largest older voting blocks in the country.
Because Trump has been beaten for his work with the new coronavirus pandemic, which kills older Americans at a higher rate than any other demographic, he is trying to increase support among the elderly. He also spoke to seniors in Sanford, Florida, on Monday and debuted a new ad on Tuesday, arguing that Biden would jeopardize access to health care for older voters.
In a video he shared on Twitter last week, Trump introduced himself as a senior and promised to give Americans quick access to the drugs he said helped him recover quickly from the coronavirus earlier this month.
But the announcement contradicted his Twitter attack on Biden on Tuesday night. Beneath the manipulated photo of Biden sitting in a wheelchair, the first letter to the “president” was crossed out to create the message “Biden for a resident” – probably a life support facility.
He also has a history of mockery of people with disabilities, including a scandalous attempt at a rally to imitate a New York Times journalist who has arthrogryposis, which affects the mobility of his joints.
Trump’s campaign did not immediately respond to a request for comment on the tweet.
