President Donald Trump said he is likely to close the US border if Mexico does not do more to stop migrants from reaching the United States.
Closing will break the billions of dollars in trade.
Mr Trump's threat follows a jump of migrants traveling through Mexico to seek refuge in the United States.
Mexican President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador said he would not be involved in a confrontation on the matter.
- The US-Mexican border "at break"
Foreign Minister Marcello Ebrard said in a chirping that Mexico is a "big neighbor" to the US and "will not act on threats."
What did Mr. Trump say?
Mr Trump told reporters on Friday: "There is a very high probability I will close the border next week, and that will be good for me."
He said that it is very easy for Mexico to "stop people from coming, but they do not choose to do so."
Later, the president wrote a series of tweets that concluded that as the US "loses so much money with them, especially when you add to drug trafficking, etc., closing the borders will be a good thing!"
Did Mexico answer?
President Lopez Obrador said on Thursday that the issue of migration is "not dependent on us Mexicans."
He said this was a problem coming from the Central American countries and not from Mexico.

- "Why Am I Going" ̵
"The Mexican is no longer looking for a job in the United States." Most [of migrants] are residents of our Central American countries, "he said. ] Reuters
Following President Trump's tweets on Friday, Lopez Obrador told a crowd of supporters: "I want to make it clear that we will not fight the US government, peace and love." to migration as a "human right" and said, "People in Central America have no options, so they go looking for a way to make their living."
Why does Mr. Trump want to close the border?
Internal Security Minister Kirjen Nielsen said border guard staff was overloaded with a huge increase in asylum seekers fleeing violence in El Salvador, Honduras and Guatemala. Interior Ministry officials said the expectations for the March border are expected to reach 100,000, which is the highest in a decade. Over 1000 unaccompanied children are among those who are currently in school.
Ms. Nielsen warned Congress that the US government is facing a "collapse of the whole system" as it tries to take care of 6,600 immigrant families currently detained.
- Tramp changes the policy of separating migrants
It is unclear how closing ports could reduce the number of migrants entering the country as many arrive at unofficial entry points and can legally request help at the moment they land on American land.
DHS has moved 750 border guards from port ports to help the process of asylum seekers arriving between official crossing points. What could be the impact?
Ms. Nielsen warned Americans that "they can feel the effects of this emergency situation."
Lack of staff already has an impact. The traffic jams between Quidditch Juarez and El Paso, Texas were longer than usual on Friday, with a driver claiming it was closed for three hours, Reuters reported.
Closing the border can have a significant financial impact, destroying tourism and trade between the US and Mexico, which reached a total of $ 612 billion last year, according to the US Census Bureau.
Kurt Honol, head of the CCE business group in Tijuana, Mexico, said there could be billions of dollars worth of losses. "It's obvious he's not measuring what he's saying," Mr. Honnold added.
What's the background to this? Mr Trump's 2015 candidacy is based on repression against illegal immigration, blaming Mexico for "drug abuse, the transference of criminals, and their abusers".
