On Monday, Trump plans to award Representative Jim Jordan (Ohio) the highest civic honor. On Tuesday, he plans to visit the Alamo, Texas, to visit a section of the US-Mexico border. And on Thursday, Trump plans to reward New England Patriots head coach Bill Belichick with the presidential medal for freedom, according to a White House official.
A Patriots spokesman did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
The president’s efforts to follow a normal schedule of events amid the turmoil he inspired began last week when, after the riots, he awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom to professional golfers Annika Sorenstam and Gary Player. This week̵
Obviously, not everyone in the administration is doing the usual way. Vice President Mike Pence also planned to hold events this week highlighting political gains for the administration. Now, however, he is expected to lie low in his last days in the White House, according to people close to him. Pence and Trump reportedly did not speak after crowds of Trump supporters descended the hill while Pence was there to oversee the certification of the Electoral College in Congress.
With only 10 days left in his service, Trump is trying to take advantage of the power of the presidency until the last minute. He has devised preventive pardons for family members and even his closest employees, and is expected to complete his last Air Force One trip back to Florida before Biden takes office in the final suspension of election results.
The Freedom Medal for Belichik will be the culmination of one of the most public relations with Trump, who enjoyed a major sporting figure during his presidency.
Last month, Trump reappointed Belichick to the Presidential Council on Sports, Fitness and Nutrition, and before that he welcomed Belichick and the Patriots to the White House after their victory in the Super Bowl against the Atlanta Falcons in 2017. But the team did not go for a traditional ceremony after the 2019 championship. ., after winning the Super Bowl again, although Trump owner and friend Robert Kraft made personal appearances without the team.
Belichik wrote a letter in support of Trump during the 2016 election, and the president called him a “very good friend.” The admiration is so deep that Trump is considering turning to the coach as a military adviser.
“He’s a very good friend of mine.” He’s the winner, “Trump told Hugh Hewitt in a radio interview in August. – You know, if I ever had a military battle, I would call Belichik and say what you think? What do you think? Give me some ideas. “
Belichik, who has no military experience – but whose father was a former intelligence officer for the Naval Academy – said it was a “very nice compliment” but was doing well in his daily work.
“I’m flattered by that,” Belichik told WEEI radio in Boston. “But I’m just going to stick to coaching football.”
Of the 25 presidential medals of freedom that Trump has awarded or announced, 15 are for people known primarily for sports, including two posthumous awards (Babe Ruth, Babe Didrickson Zacharias). The others were Lou Holtz, Alan Page and Roger Staubach (football); Jerry West and Bob Cusy (basketball); Mariano Rivera (baseball); Jim Ryan (track); Dan Gable (wrestling); Player, Sorenstam and Tiger Woods (golf); and Roger Penske (car racing).
