Twitter says a copy-phishing attack led to a huge bitcoin scam

Twitter provided an update on the unprecedented July 15 attack, which allowed hackers to post messages from some of the service’s most popular accounts, a blog post and a series of tweets posted Thursday night. Now it is written on Twitter that several employees were targeted with a phishing attack over a telephone copy. Although Twitter doesn’t say much, it probably means that hackers called Twitter employees while posing as colleagues or members of Twitter’s own security team and made them reveal the credentials they use to access internal systems.

Earlier, Twitter said that its own tools were compromised in the attack, but so far the company has not specified how this happened. “This attack relies on a significant and concerted attempt to mislead certain employees and use human vulnerabilities to gain access to our internal systems,”

; Twitter said on its support account.

Twitter also reiterated that attackers targeted 130 accounts, tweeted 45, and accessed direct messages from 36, but reduced the number of accounts that downloaded their Twitter data (which would include direct messages) from “to 8 “to 7.

Twitter limited features and locked accounts for some users currently after the attack. Although many features have returned, “some features (namely access to your Twitter download feature) have been affected,” Twitter said in its blog post. The company also said it currently has “significantly limited” access to its internal tools and “improves our methods of detecting and preventing inappropriate access to our internal systems.”

During the attack, hackers tweeted bitcoin fraud from Twitter accounts of President Barack Obama, Democratic presidential candidate Joe Biden, Tesla and SpaceX CEO Elon Musk, Microsoft co-founder Bill Gates and others. The FBI has launched an investigation into the attack.
