Two Indian children allegedly beaten to death for "public street defeat"

12-year-old Roshni Valmiki and her 10-year-old brother Avinash were attacked on Wednesday morning while beating a public street in the Bhadhi village in Shivpuri district, Madhya Pradesh in central India, said a local police deputy superintendent Singh.

After being beaten with sticks, the siblings were taken to the district hospital, where doctors also declared them dead, Singh said. Defeat in this village is forbidden, he added. The two siblings were thought to be on their way to visit their grandfather.

Police arrested two brothers for assault. Singh said the incident was still under investigation.

Authorities provided the family with 60,000 rupees ($ 845) in financial assistance for funeral and other expenses. Under Indian law, they will also receive compensation of 400,000 rupees ($ 5,600)

Both children are Dalit, an ethnic group in India that makes up just over 1
6% of the population, according to the latest census. Dalits are among the most marginalized groups in India, a legacy of an already banned caste system that has stratified Indian society for generations. Seen as 'unclean', they are considered inaccessible by the higher castes.
After his death, Mayawati – the first female Dalit chief minister in India to go by one name – condemned the violence and said that the Dalits were victims of all kinds of malicious atrocities.

She urged the government to explain why proper, indoor toilets are often not available in the villages where Dalits and other lower castes live.

Earlier this month, international human rights activists shook up the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation's decision to award the controversial Prime Minister of India in recognition of his work to improve sanitation in the country. The foundation defended its decision, saying that Narendra Modi's efforts have helped millions have access to safe sanitation.

Chief Minister Kamal Nath called the incident "heartbreaking". reachable & # 39; Dalit wife "data-src-mini =" // cdn.cnn.com/cnnnext/dam/assets/160725124135-dalit-women-collage-white-small-169.jpg "data-src-xsmall =" // cdn .cnn.com / cnnnext / dam / assets / 160725124135-dalit-women-collage-white-medium-plus-169.jpg "data-src-small =" http://cdn.cnn.com/cnnnext/dam/ assets / 160725124135-dalit-women-collage-white-large-169.jpg "data-src-medium =" // cdn.cnn.com/cnnnext/dam/assets/160725124135-dalit-women-collage-white-exlarge -169.jpg "data-src-large =" // cdn.cnn.com/cnnnext/dam/assets/160725124135-dalit-women-collage-white-super-169.jpg "data-src-full16x9 =" / /cdn.cnn.com/cnnnext/dam/assets/160725124135-dalit-women-collage-white-full-169.jpg "data-src-mini1x1 =" // cdn.cnn.com/cnnnext/dam/assets/ 160725124135-dalit-women-collage-white-small-11.jpg "data-demand-load =" not-loaded "data-eq-pts =" mini: 0, xsmall: 221, small: 308, medium: 461, large: 781 "src =" data: image / gif; base64, R0lGODlhEAAJAJEAAAAAAP /////// wAAACH5BAEAAAIALAAAAAAQAAkAAAIKlI + py + 0Po5yUFQA7 "/>

"The incident involving the murder of two innocent children in the village of Bhavhedi, in the Shivpuri district, is very heartbreaking," he said in 1945. in a tweet Wednesday, "Instructions have been issued for strict action against the accused and for providing all possible help and protection to the family."

This is not the first time that violence has been committed against Dalit in India.

Last year, two men were killed after right-wing Hindu nationalists allegedly threw stones at Dalit, marking the 200th anniversary of a battle significant to the Dalit community. The deaths provoked unrest and violent protests that led to at least 10 deaths.

In November, a 13-year-old Dalit girl was beheaded in Salem County in the southern state of Tamil Nadu. Police have charged the alleged killer with an act that criminalizes caste-based violence.
