I have a chance to extend my hands with the redesigned model, which Samsung says will avoid causing damage that will break the screen of some reviewers. (The CNET review has never broken, but the.)
The Fold Galaxy looks much the same as it used to be, but there is actually less chance of particles crawling under the screen. Samsung completely eliminated the question of whether the protective layer on the original design was an optional screen protector or an essential part of the display's integrity – in fact, the latter, as some reviewers learned the hard way earlier this year.
Opening and closing folding also feels different. Smoother, maybe. Healthier. I always liked to open and close the original design over time with my phone: The feeling of resistance when you close the screen and feel the magnetic sides close.
Now somehow it feels more complete. It's hard to say why exactly with the original Galaxy Fold so far in the rearview mirror – the last time I kept it was in mid-April.
Here's every way the Galaxy Fold has changed.
No visible screen protector
If you peel this off, it immediately renders the Fold screen unusable. Now this polymer layer extends under the plastic frame. It's still there, but you can't see it and it should be.
Screen covers at the ends of the phone
The new T-shaped plastic "caps" clog the air gaps that existed before when you fold the screen of the phone – this is the sag that is created as part of the kinetic process. I tried to nail my nails around this part to see if I could create openings, but failed. This is soothing.
The previous Galaxy Fold design had a metallic layer supporting the cushion and then the top of the display. Samsung says this has made the folding of the screen, which runs down the center of the phone, look more pronounced. Now it's reinforced on the screen by adding a second layer of metal to this pillow. We'll see if this reduces the appearance of the crease and also preserves the damage by pushing too hard on the display sideways.
No more colors Astro Blue or Martian Green
Blue and green really took Fold over the top, but Samsung told us that it wouldit's a pity, but actually I'm not surprised. Samsung may be preparing for less sales as a result of dwindling enthusiasm and therefore controlling its production.
There is no Galaxy Fold 5G in the US
Anyone in Korea who purchases the Galaxy Fold will receive the default 5G version, but. Samsung says the 5G version will come in select countries, naturally at a higher price than the 4G models if both are sold side by side. This includes the UK, where the Galaxy Fold 5G will be available from EE from September 18th.
