Military authorities say the US Air Force and Canadian fighters were accompanied by escorting two Russian bombers who traveled to the Arctic region near the North American coast. -18 fighters identified two Russian strategic Tu-160 bombers who were entering an area patrolled by the Royal Canadian Air Force on Saturday morning.
There was no announcement of a conflict between Russian, US and Canadian aircraft. NORAD says it uses radars, satellites and fighters to patrol the sky and monitor aircraft entering the United States or Canada airspace.
"The most important priority of NORAD is the protection of Canada and the United States, tracking and positively identifying aircraft of interest close to US and Canadian airspace," said General Terrence J. O'Connell, Commander of NORAD. 1
