US Navy F / A-18 crashes in California

"Search and rescue personnel are on site and the status of the pilot is currently unknown," Lieutenant-Colonel. Lydia Bock, spokesman for the joint strike, said in a statement.

"The cause of the crash is currently under investigation," Bock adds.

The F / A-18 was assigned to Vigilantes of Shock Squadron (VFA) 151, based at Lemoore Naval Air Station, California.

The US Navy issued a tweet earlier Wednesday confirming the crash.

The status of the pilot is unknown and search and rescue efforts are currently underway.

"At approximately 10:00 AM PST F / A-18E crashed near @NAWS_CL. Search and rescue efforts are underway," the Air Force tweeted Wednesday from its confirmed Twitter account.

Ino County Karma Sheriff's Office spokesman Karma Roper told CNN that they are helping to secure the area until the military arrives on site.

Naval Air Weapons Station China Lake is located in the Western Mojave Desert of California and is approximately 1

25 miles north of Los Angeles.

The F / A-18 fighter jet forms the backbone of the Navy Jet Fleet, and the Super Hornet variant began operation in 2001.
