US Open 2019: Rafael Nadal Fights Epic Attempt to Return Daniel Medvedev to Win 19th Grand Slam Title in Career



NEW YORK – Rafael Nadal defeats Daniel Medvedev in an epic five-set match, 7-5, 6-3, 5-7, 4-6, 6-4 to win the singles title at Men's single 2019 US Open. It was the 19th Nadal Grand Slam title and the fifth US Open title.

With Sunday's victory, Nadal is just behind Roger Federer's record for 20 years on a single with 20 singles. Novak Djokovic, the youngest of the Big Three at 32, has a total of 1

6. Nadal also passed Djokovic with a fourth US Open title and is now shy of Federer's record five, with Medvedev, 23, ranking fifth in the Grand Slam final of his career.

After a narrow first set, which lasted 62 minutes later, Nadal took the second, but the match turned Medvedev's way into the third set, after Nadal took advantage of the first giving her a chance to break into the third set, to a 3-1 lead, Medvedev fought back and held the lead to 5-4. The pair entered the US Open with the most wins in the ATP Tour this year, Medvedev by 50 and Nadal by 46. Although Medvedev didn't finish the season with the first Grand Slam title in his career, he still played an impressive summer and was spectacular in the upcoming heavy court events and all the way to the US Open finals. In Sunday's finale, Medvedev did what very few ATP Tour players can do – jerk Nadal. He showed tremendous emotional maturity on the court and continued to fight for every single point.

The last 12 Grand Slam tournaments have been won by Roger Federer, Novak Djokovic or Nadal. The last time a player outside the Big Three won a major championship was when Stan Vavrinka defeated Djokovic in four sets at the US Open 2016. In 2019, he played in three Grand Slam finals, winning two of three. He lost to Djokovic at this year's Australia Open, but then expanded his own record with France's Open France's 12th crown in Paris.
