PROVO – It was a difficult year for many of us, but it was especially difficult for Tia Stokes, as the inspiring Utah mother is battling cancer and facing a new opponent in COVID-19.
Of all the lessons that players can learn from the grid, teamwork can simply be at the top.
Especially for Timpview High School, where players learn what fighting and caring for each other really is.
This is part of the reason they wore “#TiasTribe” on their T-shirts during a recent game.
“You can feel the love. You can feel the support and it just makes you want to keep fighting, ”she said.
Stokes has returned to the hospital. Not because her cancer got worse, but because she recently tested positive for COVID-1
“I’m just trying to rest … a lot. “I got a lot of platelets and blood transfusions while I was in the hospital, because at the moment my number is really low,” Stokes said. “I don’t have an immune system, which makes it even scarier for COVID, because I don’t really have anything to fight it with right now.”
Since the mother of five was diagnosed with leukemia earlier this year, she has shared her story on her social media pages. More than a million people are watching her inspiring battle.
“I do it to document my trip, but I also do it because I know there are other people who are going through difficult times,” she said. “Especially now in our world.”
For Stokes, however, things just got harder because of her coronavirus test.
“I do my best to stay positive and I am a really positive person. “I was raised that way, but it’s still hard,” Stokes said.
She also learned that her brother was ideal for a bone marrow transplant to help her fight cancer.
The coronavirus caught her attention immediately.
“I believe in miracles, so I know anything can happen,” she said. “We pray for prayers for our family.”
This is just the last opponent she has no doubt will win.
A family friend has created a GoFundMe * page to help with medical expenses.
